Coronation timetable: of king Charles

Millions of people are expected tune into the coronation of King Charles on Saturday, 6 May.

Here is a full hour-by-hour guide to what’s happening and when on the day of King Charles’s coronation.



The big day will begin with “The King’s Procession” through central London at 10.20am.

The Gold State Coach, famously criticised for being uncomfortable by many monarchs, including the late Queen, will carry the pair back to the palace after the ceremony, taking the same route in reverse.

It will be the first time either of them have travelled in the coach, which is more than 260 years old and reserved for use solely by the sovereign and their consort.

Thousands of people are expected to line the streets from as early as 6am when viewing areas along the route open to the public.
King Charles and Queen Camilla will travel to Westminster Abbey in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach from Buckingham Palace down The Mall, through Admiralty Arch, and into Trafalgar Square before turning down Whitehall along Parliament Street and around Parliament Square before arriving at the abbey.
Some enthusiastic royal fanatics started camping outside Buckingham Palace a week ahead of the coronation so that they could secure a spot.

The King’s coronation is by far the biggest royal event this year and likely for some years to come.

However, it will be a scaled back, slimmed down event compared with the late Queen’s, King Charles and Queen Camilla’s coronation route stretches only 1.3 miles long, which is about a quarter of the length of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s five-mile journey in 1953.

The actual coronation ceremony in which King Charles and Queen Camilla are crowned will take place on Saturday, 6 May, from 11am.

It will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury and “reflect the Monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry”, Buckingham Palace said.

During what will be a “solemn, religious service”, the King will take an oath, swearing to govern faithfully with justice and mercy, to uphold the Gospel, and to maintain the doctrine and worship of the Church of England.

After the crowning, the King will move to his throne for the enthroning, during which the Archbishop will tell him to “stand firm, and hold fast from henceforth”.

The Queen will be anointed, invested and crowned after the Homage of the People, which invites those observing to pledge their allegiance to the King.

Queen Camilla’s anointing will take place without a screen or canopy to shield her from public view a break from tradition.

When they leave the abbey, the newly crowned King and Queen will return toBuckingham Palace at 1.33pm.
