Chris Brown Pleads Not Guilty to Additional Charges in London Nightclub Assault Case

On July 11, 2025, Grammy-winning R&B artist Chris Brown appeared at Southwark Crown Court in London, where he entered not guilty pleas to two additional charges related to an alleged assault at Tape nightclub in Mayfair on February 19, 2023. The new charges assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon, specifically a tequila bottle join an existing count of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent, to which Brown had previously pleaded not guilty in June 2025.

His co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, known professionally as HoodyBaby, also denied all charges. The high profile case, centered on what prosecutors describe as an “unprovoked attack,” has drawn widespread attention due to Brown’s celebrity status and the serious allegations against him.

‎The incident allegedly occurred at the upscale Tape nightclub, involving music producer Abraham “Abe” Diaw, who claims Chris Brown struck him multiple times with a bottle before pursuing him to another area of the venue, where he was punched and kicked. Prosecutors assert that surveillance footage captured the assault in front of a crowded club, providing key evidence for the case. Diaw had previously filed a civil lawsuit against Brown in Los Angeles in October 2023, alleging severe injuries, including head lacerations and torn ligaments in his leg. That lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice in June 2025, preventing it from being refiled, though no public confirmation of a settlement has surfaced. The criminal proceedings, however, remain active, with a trial scheduled for October 26, 2026.

Brown was arrested in May 2025 at the Lowry Hotel in Salford, Greater Manchester, shortly after arriving in the UK to prepare for his European tour. Initially denied bail, he secured release by paying a £5 million ($6.7 million) security fee, subject to strict conditions. These include surrendering his passport when not touring, residing at a designated UK address, avoiding contact with Diaw, and staying away from Tape nightclub. These terms have allowed Brown to continue his “Breezy Bowl XX” tour, marking 20 years in the music industry, with performances scheduled at venues like Cardiff’s Principality Stadium and London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. His next court appearance aligns with the conclusion of the tour’s European leg.

‎Akinlolu, a 39-year-old rapper and longtime collaborator of Brown’s, faces identical charges and has also pleaded not guilty. The prosecution alleges that both men participated in the assault, with Brown initiating the attack and Akinlolu joining in. During the July 11 hearing, the courtroom’s public gallery was filled with around 20 supporters, some of whom shouted words of encouragement, such as “We love you, Chris,” as Chris Brown exited in a light brown suit. The singer acknowledged his fans with a brief wave, maintaining a composed demeanor despite the gravity of the charges.

‎The legal proceedings add another chapter to Brown’s complex career, which has been marked by chart-topping success and recurrent controversies. Despite the allegations, Brown has continued to perform, celebrating his 20-year milestone with sold out shows across Europe. The outcome of the trial could have significant implications for his career, particularly given the high profile nature of the case and the substantial bail conditions. Legal analysts suggest that the evidence, particularly the surveillance footage, will play a critical role in determining the case’s outcome, which could influence Brown’s public image and future endeavors in the music industry.

‎As the trial date of October 2026 approaches, the case remains a focal point for discussions about celebrity accountability and the intersection of fame and justice. The public and media will closely monitor developments at Southwark Crown Court, where the prosecution and defense will present their arguments. For now, Brown remains focused on his tour, but the looming trial casts a shadow over his celebrations, with fans and critics alike awaiting the resolution of this high-stakes legal battle. Updates on the case can be followed through reputable news outlets covering the proceedings, as the music world watches to see how this chapter in Brown’s career unfolds.
