Arsenal have taken a massive, perhaps definitive, step toward their first Premier League title since 2004 following a pulsating 1-0 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium. In a match defined by high-stakes tension at both ends of the table, Mikel Arteta’s side demonstrated the "mentality of champions," weathering a spirited West Ham performance and a chaotic injury-time equalizer that was ultimately overturned by VAR. 

The result restores Arsenal's five-point lead over Manchester City, placing the destiny of the trophy firmly in their hands.  

The breakthrough arrived in the 83rd minute through Leandro Trossard, ending the Belgian’s recent goal drought at the most critical moment of the campaign. After a tireless Arsenal press, captain Martin Ødegaard found space in the box to deliver a precise cutback, which Trossard swept home via a slight deflection off Tomáš Souček. The goal sparked jubilant celebrations in the away end, but the relief was short-lived as the match descended into one of the most controversial finishes in recent Premier League history.  

Deep into ten minutes of stoppage time, West Ham appeared to have snatched a vital point in their fight against relegation when Callum Wilson lashed the ball into the net following a frantic corner scramble. However, after a lengthy four-minute review, referee Chris Kavanagh was directed to the pitchside monitor. The goal was subsequently disallowed for a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, with VAR footage showing Pablo’s arm obstructing the Spaniard’s attempt to claim the initial cross. The victory, while vital, came at a significant physical cost for the Gunners. Ben White was forced off midway through the first half with a concerning knee injury after a challenge on Crysencio Summerville, later seen leaving the stadium in a protective brace. With Riccardo Calafiori also failing to emerge for the second half due to a knock, Arteta was forced into a tactical reshuffle that saw Declan Rice drop into the backline. Despite the defensive instability, Arsenal’s makeshift defense held firm to record their 18th clean sheet of the season.  

Following this result, the math for Arsenal is becoming increasingly clear. With 79 points from 36 games, they lead Manchester City (74 points with a game in hand). Arsenal can officially clinch the Premier League title as early as Monday, May 18, if they defeat already-relegated Burnley at the Emirates and Manchester City drop points in their upcoming fixture against Crystal Palace. Should City win their game in hand, Arsenal would still secure the trophy by winning their final two matches against Burnley and Crystal Palace, regardless of results elsewhere.  

For West Ham, the defeat leaves them in a precarious position. While they pushed the league leaders to the limit, they remain in the bottom three with only two matches remaining to save their top-flight status.
